| Abstract | This is the first stage of a research project concerned with the various ways in which parents perceive and categorize children's behavior and the effect this perception may have on parental reaction to such behavior. The present study compared the various ways in which mothers and fathers perceptually categorize the behavior of girls and boys. A group of white middle-class parents who had a boy and a girl between 6 and 11 were individually interviewed about the social behavior of their children. A long list of phrases descriptive of children's behavior was formed and submitted to another similar group of 40 parents who were asked to sort each phrase on the basis of how they would react if the behavior occurred in a boy or a girl of their own. Various statistical procedures indicated the existence of a strong evaluative dimension of a good-bad social behavior underlying the structuring of the stimulus material. Seven other psychological dimensions were also revealed. Moreover, fathers and mothers differed in their perceptions of the social behavior of boys and girls. The authors discuss a number of studies which are either going to be conducted or which are currently being conducted. (Author/SE) |
